THE CHALLENGE

Designing a lightweight, modular clamping system for a desktop CNC mill to secure parts from the sides without blocking the top surface or taking up unnecessary workspace.

HOW

  • CAD Modeling in Siemens NX: Designed a grid baseplate with locating holes, a 90° reference corner stop, and eccentric cam clamps.

  • Eccentric Cam Clamping: Created teardrop-shaped clamps that apply strong lateral pressure as they rotate, keeping the entire top of the part clear for machining.

  • Tool-Free Pin Setup: Used slide-in pins instead of slow threaded bolts, allowing clamps to be moved across the grid in seconds.

  • Material Choices: Used MDF for a flat, stable baseplate and durable plywood for the clamps to provide maximum grip and wear resistance.

THE RESULTS AND REDESIGN

  • Zero Tool Collisions: Side-clamping eliminated the risk of the milling bit hitting clamps during operation.

  • Fast Setup: Drop-in pins made mounting and swapping parts much faster than standard screw systems.
